When it comes to TV, it’s like Al Capone said, give the people what they want. Now everyone loves food, everyone wants to learn about food and everyone loves to watch a charismatic chef talking about his passion. It is no surprise then that the following cookery shows are all have a huge fanbase, mainly because of the TV chefs.
Like James Martin or instance, who presents Saturday Kitchen in which he invites a number of celebs and topical guests to come and taste some exotic dishes made by world-renowned cooks. There is such variety on the show, with guest appearances from Ken Hom, Frank Bordini, Atul Kockhar and many more. They celebrate cuisines from all over the world, and it goes to show how much the Brits love their grub, because it has been on air since 2002.
Chefs these days are treated like royalty and they behave like rock-stars, they are bad boys with hot tempers, like Gordon Ramsay who has had a number of excellent programmes beside his name. One being the fantastic Hell’s Kitchen, which is potentially the most volatile cookery series ever. Ove the course of weeks, two teams compete against each other in the red and blue kitchens to create stupendous dishes for paying customers. At the end of the show, one of the contestants is sent home until there is only one winner.
The pressure is on however, as Gordon Ramsay barks out orders from the pass and rips them to pieces if the make mistakes at crucial times in the service. Another of Gordon’s flagship shows, which has made him a huge name in the states in Kitchen Nightmares, in which he goes into a failing restaurant business and turns around its fortunes. Quite often, the owners are stuck in the mud and reluctant to change their ways, and sparks always fly.

Made In Chelsea

Reality TV is seen by many as a puerile and substandard form of television which acts to numb the minds of the people who watch it. There have been a number of shows which perpetuate a vacuous image of Britain today, where girls are vulgar and drinking like lads and the men are apish testosterone fuelled numbskulls, as seen in Geordie Shore. And to a lesser extent in Desperate Scousewives and The Only Way Is Essex. But one show has tried to rejuvenate this sorry image of ‘Broken Britain’ and binge drinking, and show a more refined and stylish view of Royal Britannia. That show is Made in Chelsea.
Made in Chelsea follows the lives of a number of socialites, models and entrepreneurs who have live a very privileged lifestyle in the borough of Kensington, mostly because of mummy’s and daddy’s riches. These are all immaculately turned out and well-spoken young people, but although the use of language may be different, the sordid themes are the same as ever. There are love triangles, catty feuds between girls and secret trysts in expensive cars. It has scripted to a large extent but the relationships and emotions of the cast members are said to be genuine, so it is hard to tell where reality starts and the fiction begins.
It obviously owes a debt of gratitude to polished American series like The Hills, which captures the lives of the fabulously rich like Spencer Pratt, Lauren Conrad, Brody Jenner, and Kirstin Cavallari. These hip young dudes and dudettes take holidays in Cabo, Mexico, every other week and every show there one of the cast seemed to be bed hopping. It was immensely popular in the U.S and the UK, which gave rise to Made In Chelsea which was designed to mirror it, but adding a distinctly British flavour. The main character in MIC includes Millie MacKintosh, Spencer Mathews, Amber Atherton, Victoria Baker-Harber, Francis Boulle, Caggie Dunlop, Gabriella Ellis and many more.

The Greatest 90’s Kids TV

The 90's were a time of pure escapism on the television sets, and children were particularly well catered to during this era. This was the heyday of cartoons and programming for teens, with Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon producing some of the best remembered shows from this time. Here are a couple of the best loved shows from this particularly exception period of TV:
Kenan and Kel: The show was set in Chicago, and focused on the exploits of two lovable rogues, Kenan Rockmore and Kel Kimble. The pair are students, and Kenan earns some cash on the side working at a local grocery store. Kel is like a human wrecking ball, and has a habit of messing up the shop and aggravating Kenan's father to the point of explosion. These two lovable rogues get themselves into all kind of mischief. The show had a successful run between July 1996 to July 2000, which included a feature film. And who could forget that all remembered exchange, which went a little something like this: “Who Love's Orange Soda?” “Kel Loves Orange Soda” “Is it true?” “MmmHMM… I do, I do, I doo-oo”.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch: This was a classic from back in the day, which followed the story of teenage witch Sabrina, played by Clarissa Explains It All star, Melissa Joan. It follows her as she comes to terms with being a teenager and a witch, while living with her two Aunt's Zelda and Hilda. She is forced to pretend to be normal around her friends, hiding her true identity from everyone, including her boyfriend Harvey who is a simple and charming jock. Her journey through adolescence is made slightly easier by her talking cat Salem, who has a British accent and gives Sabrina the advice she needs in troublesome situations. The TV series ran between 1996 and 2003.

UK Soaps Biggest Villains

Soaps are synonymous with baddies. No story line would be complete without the mysterious, malevolent character that comes from nowhere to wreak havoc on the lives of the unsuspecting soap victims. There have been villains who disappear after one foul swoop and those who out stay their welcome. Here is a list of some of the meanest crooks and baddies to ever grace a British soap.
CORONATION STREET - TRACY BARLOW. With one foul swoop this scheming woman took revenge and killed her then boyfriend Charlie Stubbs. Charlie who had been carrying on behind Tracy's back was bludgeoning to death in no uncertain terms. The storyline which played out in 2007 eventually saw Tracy taken off to jail in handcuffs and the actress who played her Kate Ford, left the soap. Tracy Barlow did however make a shock return earlier this year, after she lied to the courts and said that Gail was responsible for the murder of husband Joe.
EASTENDERS - JANINE BUTCHER: When producers dreamed up Janine Butcher, they broke the mould. She took complete pleasure in torturing her foes with mental games; she is the archetypal black widow after she murdered Barry Evans. Janine is full of cunning and she seduced Barry, and then lead him to a remote Scottish hill location during their honeymoon. She then calculatingly gave him a push down a deep hole and watched him die. The police were unable to get enough evidence to convict her for that murder, but did time for the death of Laura Beale, after Pat refused to provide her with an alibi.
CORONATION STREET - TONY GORDON: This evil character left a trail of death and misery in his wake after killing Liam Connor and Robbie Sloan. He was apoplectic after discovering that Liam had an affair with his soon to be wife Carla, and Tony plotted his dead. During his own stag do he chose the moment, and Liam was murdered in a "hit-and-run" by a speeding car. Tony was sent to prison, but escaped after joining forces with cell-buddy Robbie, who he later murdered in cold blood. Tony got his comeuppance though after he took Carla and Hayley hostage, and he was the only one to die after setting the factory ablaze.

Celebrity Big Brother 2012

The Big Brother theme music is back on the Tele-box, with a new team of d-list celebs for the general public to spy on. Picking favourites has always been a slow process in this kind of long winded format, as first impressions quickly fade when Big Brother plays the evil card, and gets under their shallow skin and shows their faults and imperfections in the cold light of day. It's a cruel old world.
The 2011/12 series unites the likes of (take a deep breath) Frankie Cocozza, Kirk Norcross, Natasha Giggs, Nicola McLean, Natalie Cassidy, Denise Welch, Georgia Salpa, Andrew Stone, Michael Madsen, Kristina and Karissa Shannon, Gareth Thomas and Romeo.
Sparks have been flying already as this rowdy lot sort out the pecking order. The Only Way Is Essex star Kirk Norcross, a man oozing self-confidence, was taken down a peg or two after his advances with the playmate twins Kristina and Karissa failed miserably. Shamed X-Factor contestant Frankie Cocozza continues to try his luck, though he is starting to annoy the girls as he continues to ignore their scathing rebuttals.
The public vote was counted and Andrew was the first housemate to be booted out of the BB house. Most of the housemates who voted for him cited his inability to relax as the main factor for his nomination, as well as the infatuation with the cameras around the house. The public agreed.
Highlights so far have all come by way of Hollywood heavyweight and Kill Bill star Michael Madsen. He has carried himself through the first few days with total indifference to the others, revealing a sharp wit and humour no one has seen before. His stories have been entertained the hapless gang of cronies, including one anecdote that included Al Pacino lending him his jet so he could go home to see his kids. Now that's a story. He also thought Andrew Stone was a spy.

Eastenders – The Best Comebacks

Every once in a while, an old face returns to Albert Square from the past and wreaks havoc on a new list of unsuspecting cast members. It is an effective plot device, as script writers know immediately that old characters have a special resonance with the general public. Absence so often makes the heart grow fonder.
Before long old animosities and wounds start to resurface, feuds break out in the market and in the Old Vic, which creates the tension that has epitomised the show since its first airing in 1985. Here is a list of some of the most shocking comebacks ever on Britain's favourite soap:
3. Dirty Den – In 2003, one of Walford's most controversial actors, made his big return. Denis Watts was a notorious womaniser in his heyday and he returned with all of his old corrupt principles and schmoozing charm. Watts was shot by the side of a canal and assumed dead when he left the show in 1994, but came back in one of the most unbelievable storylines ever. That was until he was booted off the show in 2004 once and for all, after some well-publicised misdemeanours away from the set involving a web-cam.
2. Grant Mitchell – One half of the most menacing set of bald brothers ever to grace our television screens, Grant and Phil Mitchell, struck fear into the heart of every man, woman and child who wronged them. Grant left the show in 1999 in a fit of gun shots and madness, after plunging into the Thames with his brother in the passenger seat. Phil was rescued from the water, and Grant survived as well – but eloped to Rio de Janeiro with a case full of stolen money. Grant has returned twice since then to shake the square to its very core, in 2005 and 2006, and both times the rating figures have shot through the roof.
1. Bianca and Ricky – One of the most enduring love stories on Eastenders has been that of fiery red head Bianca Jackson and mechanic Ricky Butcher. Patsy Palmer left in 1999 as she wanted to spend more time with her family and Sid Owen followed soon after in 2000 to pursue a music career. The pair returned briefly for a cameo in 2001, but 2008 marked the big show-stopping return. Bianca was plunged into perhaps the most shocking and controversial plot in the shows history, as her daughter Whitney was groomed by her paedophile boyfriend Tony King..

UK Golden Globe Winners

The Golden Globes rolled around this year again, and there were many surprises. One of the biggest surprises was that the organisers decided that it would be a good idea to bring back Ricky Gervais to present the evening's proceedings, and luckily (or unluckily) he didn't offend as many celebrities this time around.
Quite a lot of UK talent received awards this time around. TV and film stars were awarded high honours, not to mention those who worked behind the scenes to make such great productions possible. One of the most well deserved awards given this year was Kate Winslet's for the Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie. She played Mildred Pierce in a five part series of the same name, focusing on the struggles of a single mum trying to deal with many of life's issues whilst opening a business. Her performance was incredible, and we certainly feel that the awards were given according to her merits.
Downton Abbey continues its huge success across the Atlantic, picking up the Golden Globe for Best Television Mini Series, beating Cinema Verite, The Hour, Mildred Pierce and Too Big to Fail in the process. There were also nominations for Dame Maggie Grace, Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern, who unfortunately didn't win.
Damian Lewis has been starring in the TV series Homeland for the whole season it has run as one of the main protagonists. The show received the award for the Best Drama series of the year, beating many others that put up stiff competition, including Boardwalk Empire, American Horror Story, Boss, and Game of Thrones.
There were, of course, many nominees this year that we believe had a good chance of winning but didn't. We thought Kenneth Branagh in My Week with Marilyn deserved some sort of reward, and that Jeremy Irons' performances in the Borgias series should have received more praise. Yet not everyone can win every time, and those that did win this year are certainly worth the recognition.

UK TV Remakes

The UK has produced some pretty incredible shows. From Monty Python to Dr. Who, there are just some shows produced by the UK that can't be beaten. In fact, many countries and particularly the US have taken it upon themselves to remake UK shows for their viewers. Sometimes these remakes go well (The Office) and sometimes they don't.

However, the UK has also taken series from the US and remade them for British audiences. It seems that, looking at trends, it was usually better done the other way around, and that the British are better at making their own series rather than remaking others.
Here are some examples of shows the UK chose to remake from the US versions:
Most of the shows remade by the UK are game shows. In fact, we could go on for quite a long time listing all the different game shows the British took from the US. Some examples, though, include The Price Is Right and College Bowl. The first has seen success, though the latter much less. Many of the game shows saw more or less the amount of popularity as their US counterparts, though some failed due to the differences in audience.
There were also funny shows and dramas adapted for the UK, and some of these actually did quite well. The Upper Hand, a sitcom from the 80's in the US, did well for five years from 1990 to 1995. An example of a show that flopped in its UK adaptation is Married with Children, or as it was called for the year it ran in the UK, Married for Life.
Overall, the UK has had some hits and some misses in adapting foreign TV shows, and they seem to do better when they use their own originality to create new and interesting TV.

Shows We’ll Miss

The sad thing about life is that your favourite TV show, no matter what it is, will one day come to an end. Some shows have a one year lifespan, others go on for three or four, and some have made it all the way up to 20 or more, but eventually it seems that everyone's favourite TV shows get cancelled.
2011 saw the ending of many people's favourite shows. One of the biggest shows to finally come to a close in the past year was All My Children, ABC's legendary soap opera that has been running since 1970. Many people journeyed with the characters of that show, watching the drama unfold as their own lives did the same, and it certainly won't be easy for them to let go.
Bored to Death is another series that was recently cancelled, causing all its faithful followers to groan in dismay. The show didn't appeal to everyone, but for many, it was the peak of comedy. Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galafianakis and Ted Danson enchanted the world with the depressing comedy series, and it's a shame it won't be going on any longer.
And let's not forget the shows that we lost before they even had a chance to take off. The Playboy Club and Charlie's Angels were two series that were extremely buzzed about before their release, and which sadly came to an end before their time. There were weak points in these shows, but no more than can be found in many others. We're sad that they weren't given a longer chance.
Nevertheless, we can always look forward to the future of TV and hope for better. Who knows, maybe some of our old favourites will get revived or rebooted sometime in the future.
