Eastenders – The Best Comebacks   [Report Abuse]

Posted by: nationtv
Every once in a while, an old face returns to Albert Square from the past and wreaks havoc on a new list of unsuspecting cast members. It is an effective plot device, as script writers know immediately that old characters have a special resonance with the general public. Absence so often makes the heart grow fonder.
Before long old animosities Image By: lrargerichand wounds start to resurface, feuds break out in the market and in the Old Vic, which creates the tension that has epitomised the show since its first airing in 1985. Here is a list of some of the most shocking comebacks ever on Britain's favourite soap:
3. Dirty Den – In 2003, one of Walford's most controversial actors, made his big return. Denis Watts was a notorious womaniser in his heyday and he returned with all of his old corrupt principles and schmoozing charm. Watts was shot by the side of a canal and assumed dead when he left the show in 1994, but came back in one of the most unbelievable storylines ever. That was until he was booted off the show in 2004 once and for all, after some well-publicised misdemeanours away from the set involving a web-cam.
2. Grant Mitchell – One half of the most menacing set of bald brothers ever to grace our television screens, Grant and Phil Mitchell, struck fear into the heart of every man, woman and child who wronged them. Grant left the show in 1999 in a fit of gun shots and madness, after plunging into the Thames with his brother in the passenger seat. Phil was rescued from the water, and Grant survived as well – but eloped to Rio de Janeiro with a case full of stolen money. Grant has returned twice since then to shake the square to its very core, in 2005 and 2006, and both times the rating figures have shot through the roof.
1. Bianca and Ricky – One of the most enduring love stories on Eastenders has been that of fiery red head Bianca Jackson and mechanic Ricky Butcher. Patsy Palmer left in 1999 as she wanted to spend more time with her family and Sid Owen followed soon after in 2000 to pursue a music career. The pair returned briefly for a cameo in 2001, but 2008 marked the big show-stopping return. Bianca was plunged into perhaps the most shocking and controversial plot in the shows history, as her daughter Whitney was groomed by her paedophile boyfriend Tony King..

UK Golden Globe Winners   [Report Abuse]

Posted by: nationtv
The Golden Globes rolled around this year again, and there were many surprises. One of the biggest surprises was that the organisers decided that it would be a good idea to bring back Ricky Gervais to present the evening's proceedings, and luckily (or unluckily) he didn't offend as many celebrities this time around.
Quite a lot of UK talent received awards this time around. TV and film stars were awarded high honours, not to mention those who worked behind the scenes to make such great productions possible. One of the most well deserved awards given this year was Kate Winslet's for the Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie. She played Mildred Pierce in a five part series of the same name, focusing on the struggles of a single mum trying to deal with many of life's issues whilst opening a business. Her performance was incredible, and we certainly feel that the awards were given according to her merits. Image By: smlp.co.uk
Downton Abbey continues its huge success across the Atlantic, picking up the Golden Globe for Best Television Mini Series, beating Cinema Verite, The Hour, Mildred Pierce and Too Big to Fail in the process. There were also nominations for Dame Maggie Grace, Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern, who unfortunately didn't win.
Damian Lewis has been starring in the TV series Homeland for the whole season it has run as one of the main protagonists. The show received the award for the Best Drama series of the year, beating many others that put up stiff competition, including Boardwalk Empire, American Horror Story, Boss, and Game of Thrones.
There were, of course, many nominees this year that we believe had a good chance of winning but didn't. We thought Kenneth Branagh in My Week with Marilyn deserved some sort of reward, and that Jeremy Irons' performances in the Borgias series should have received more praise. Yet not everyone can win every time, and those that did win this year are certainly worth the recognition.

UK TV Remakes   [Report Abuse]

Posted by: nationtv
The UK has produced some pretty incredible shows. From Monty Python to Dr. Who, there are just some shows produced by the UK that can't be beaten. In fact, many countries and particularly the US have taken it upon themselves to remake UK shows for their viewers. Sometimes these remakes go well (The Office) and sometimes they don't.
However, the UK has also taken series from the US and remade them for British audiences. It seems that, looking at trends, it was usually better done the other way around, and that the British are better at making their own series rather than remaking others.
Here are some examples of shows the UK chose to remake from the US versions:
Most of the shows remade by the UK are game shows. In fact, we could go on for quite a long time listing all the different game shows the British took from the US. Some examples, though, include The Price Is Right and College Bowl. The first has seen success, though the latter much less. Many of the game shows saw more or less the amount of popularity as their US counterparts, though some failed due to the differences in audience.   Image By: Elaron
There were also funny shows and dramas adapted for the UK, and some of these actually did quite well. The Upper Hand, a sitcom from the 80's in the US, did well for five years from 1990 to 1995. An example of a show that flopped in its UK adaptation is Married with Children, or as it was called for the year it ran in the UK, Married for Life.
Overall, the UK has had some hits and some misses in adapting foreign TV shows, and they seem to do better when they use their own originality to create new and interesting TV.

Shows We’ll Miss   [Report Abuse]

The sad thing about life is that your favourite TV show, no matter what it is, will one day come to an end. Some shows have a one year lifespan, others go on for three or four, and some have made it all the way up to 20 or more, but eventually it seems that everyone's favourite TV shows get cancelled.
2011 saw the ending of many people's favourite shows. One of the biggest shows to finally come to a close in the past year was All My Children, ABC's legendary soap opera that has been running since 1970. Many people journeyed with the characters of that show, watching the drama unfold as their own lives did the same, and it certainly won't be easy for them to let go.Image By: DanCentury
Bored to Death is another series that was recently cancelled, causing all its faithful followers to groan in dismay. The show didn't appeal to everyone, but for many, it was the peak of comedy. Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galafianakis and Ted Danson enchanted the world with the depressing comedy series, and it's a shame it won't be going on any longer.
And let's not forget the shows that we lost before they even had a chance to take off. The Playboy Club and Charlie's Angels were two series that were extremely buzzed about before their release, and which sadly came to an end before their time. There were weak points in these shows, but no more than can be found in many others. We're sad that they weren't given a longer chance.
Nevertheless, we can always look forward to the future of TV and hope for better. Who knows, maybe some of our old favourites will get revived or rebooted sometime in the future.

The Talented Matt Smith   [Report Abuse]

Posted by: nationtv
One of the most talented young actors to rise to recognition in past years is Matt Smith. Best known for his portrayal of the 11th Doctor on the hit science fiction show Doctor Who, Smith has garnered a reputation for being able to portray the most whimsical of characters or the most normal. He has a very broad acting range, and has been nominated for a BAFTA award for his work as The Doctor. His work as not been confined to the silver screen, either. He has appeared on the stage, perhaps most notably as Henry in Polly Stenham's play, That Face.
Matt Smith was born on 28 October 1982, in Northampton. Though he aspired to being a professional footballer, he had to abandon that dream due to a back injury. This led to his drama teacher signing him up for a school production of Twelve Angry Men. After this, he started to take an interest in acting, and eventually starred in several plays, including a version of T. S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral. Smith eventually made the transition from the stage to the television screen in the BBC adaptations of Sally Lockheart's books. His first major television role was on the BBC drama series Party Animals.
In January 2009, it was revealed by the BBC that Smith would portray the newest incarnation of The Doctor on the BBC sci-fi show Doctor Who. Though there was some initial hesitation regarding his casting – both because of his relatively young age (26) and because of the extremely high popularity of David Tennant, the previous Doctor –, Smith soon proved himself equal to the task. According to Doctor Who writer, Steven Moffat, Matt Smith's “mercurial acting style” was what cemented him as the first choice to play the characteristic role. The decision has since been vindicated by the high popularity of Smith's Doctor.

BBC Television History   [Report Abuse]

The British Broadcasting Corporation was founded in the United Kingdom in 1927, under the Royal Charter terms. Among the corporation's services is BBC Television which technically began operating in 1932 from BBC's studios. However, regular TV broadcasts officially commenced on November 2nd 1936.
John Logie Baird was the first person to broadcast on the 30-line television that was scanned mechanically in 1929. On the 2nd of August 1932, Television production changed hands from Baird's company to BBC One, a deal which lasted until 1935. On November 2nd 1936, the first electronically scanned, as well as regularly scheduled television started in London's Alexandra Palace. The broadcast was available to only a few people who were in the immediate surrounding area, but grew fast to cover approximately between 25,000 to 40,000 homes by the time World War II began. The war affected the broadcast, consequently forcing the service to suspend in 1939.
Normal transmission services were not to resume until 1946. In 1960, the BBC Television Service got a new name, “BBC TV”. By this time, the largest competitor to the channel was ITV. Among the popular programmes that the channel broadcasted by then included comedies, game shows, dramas, documentaries and soap operas among others.
In 1964, the third TV station in the UK (and second to BBC), BBC2 was launched. Consequently, BBC TV acquired a new name, BBC1. However, the launch was delayed by one day due to a major power failure in London. The video tape which was made for the launch night came to be rediscovered 39 years later in 2003. BBC2 used UHF 625-line pictures, becoming the first British Channel to do so.
1967 was a remarkable year for BBC's achievements. It was the year when regular broadcasts in colour officially began in Europe on 1st July on the BBC Two channel. The PAL system of West Germany is credited for enabling this achievement, and it is still being used even today. ITV and BBC One followed suit on November 15th 1969. So what are the pioneer programmes that are associated with these channels after the onset of coloured TV broadcasts? Initial heavyweight documentaries, like the Horizon, The Ancient of Man and Civilisation debuted on BBC2. Tom and Jerry, the famous cartoons were aired for the first time on BBC One in 1967. The curtains came down for the cartoons in 2000 when the corporation stopped airing them.
In 1974, BBC introduced Ceefax service. It was the first service of its kind in the broadcasting arena and with it, one could view the textual information on their TV sets. The technology was replaced by the BBCi service which is digital and more interactive. Today, BBCi has been replaced by the name Red Button.
BBC marked its 50th anniversary on July 15th 2004. A video was released on a DVD to showcase the special events on BBC's television broadcast since its inception. In November 2008, all the channels of BBC Television went online.
